Are there Easter eggs in OSRS’ Winter Summit trailer?
The Winter Summit is a brand new concept to OSRS and is meant to bring a new roadmap of the game plans for the upcoming year. New game content, new skilling methods, new ways to earn OSRS GP, new potential rewards, new minigames, or content reworks? This can all hide in the surprise that the J-mods have prepared for December 10th’s stream, where they will introduce the plans for early 2023 and how they could impact the game overall, your gameplay, and your OSRS gold progression using your OSRS account for sale.
History
If you’re an Old School player, you’re already used to how Jagex always chooses to announce their plans and intentions for further game developments carefully. Jagex likes to keep us updated on where into the roadmap we’re at and transparently gives us an idea of how the resources are spread across the various projects. And this is great, as many players want to know where their money or OSRS GP is going when paying for membership. This goes both ways because the roadmaps represent a clear statement from Jagex on how the efforts are spread, and it helps justify the membership fee (even if you’re not using cash, but you buy your bonds with OSRS gold).
The Winter Summit is also revamping the Summer Summit event, which took place in 2016 for Jagex’s RuneScape 3. The Summer Summit took place for several hours, so it is likely to expect a similar extensive stream from the 2022 Winter Summit.
Autumn Voyage
The video trailer of the Winter Summit features the in-game music track called “Autumn Voyage” by artist Ian Taylor which was launched in 2018 and is a version of 2004 original “Autumn Voyage” RuneScape song.
The song is played in the Lumbridge area around the calves in eastern Lumbridge. This might or might not indicate that one of the bits of content Jagex is preparing for 2023 will take place in Lumbridge. However, the video is set in Catherby, in a snowy and wintery Catherby, in what looks like a pub.
Catherby
The video starts with the focus observing a very static winter-themed Catherby, with the pine trees full of snow and the ground covered by snow during what appears to be nighttime in RuneScape. The video then leads closer and closer to a pub in Catherby, filled with light, warmth, and laughter.
There are numerous characters inside the cabin, amongst which a wizard on the left is wearing what could be a critical visual cue: the Amulet of the Eye. Jagex recently introduced the item to Old School RuneScape with the Temple of the Eye quest and the Guardians of the Rift minigame, which is also set in the Lumbridge and Dryanor area. This could further indicate that the 2023 content Jagex is preparing to announce is set in Lumbridge and could involve the Runecraft skill or a minigame.
NPCs
The middle top of the screen is covered by a huge banner hanging on the wall of the Catherby pub, and it contains a Christmas logo of RuneScape together with a big font Winter Summit 2022. In front of the banner, there are two tables at which various NPCs interact with each other. One easy-to-recognize NPC is the Wise Old Man, right in the middle. It is also important to note that he takes part in several vital quests, and you can usually find him in the Dryanor village. So what is he doing over here in Catherby? Will he be involved in this new content?
It is also worth noting that the Wise Old Man is the only NPC that can help you get rid of the junk in your bank, and this is what most players use him for, but he will also give you tasks involving various other NPCs. This is a dead part of Old Schools content which is in real need of a rework. So could this be it? Is Jagex planning on expanding the Wise Old Man’s tasks?
The NPCs at the middle table are wearing Yellow Party Hats and have a few extra Blue Party Hats on their table, but the NPCs on the left table are not wearing any. There’s also a bartender and a lady in red looking at the winter summit banner. The video ends with a new screen that displays further details about the Winter Summit event, such as the date and stream link.
Reddit Giveaway
Jagex is also announcing more upcoming teasers and doing a Reddit giveaway to celebrate the Winter Summit, where they will give an Elysian Spirit Shield neon light. They are also holding a giveaway on the official discord server. Regardless of what piece of content or the rewards are, no one can but speculate. The Easter eggs will only be confirmed after the actual Winter Summit. One thing is for sure. The rewards will undoubtedly contribute towards your character progression, which is usually advanced with XP, OSRS gold, or quality of life.
