They eluded police for years until being caught in a gunfight after attempting to derail a police train. They were wearing the notorious plough mouldboard armour, but everyone save Kelly was murdered in the end. He was just 25 years old when he was tried and executed at the Old Melbourne Gaol in 1880. His armour, as well as a wealth of material on his and his gang’s epic adventures, may be viewed in the State Library of Victoria.
The Shot Tower of Coop
From the time it was constructed in 1888 until 1961, here was where shot pellets were made. It was previously the city’s highest structure before industrialization allowed for more sturdy and higher structures. It has been kept in remarkable condition, due in part to a massive metal and glass cone that was constructed above it and is now a museum. Given that it was scheduled to be destroyed in 1973, the structure is a sight to see. It is currently part of the Melbourne Central complex and is part of Melbourne’s urban fabric.
