Once you complete the Forsaken DLC, you will find yourself in The Dreaming City. This cavernous vault is home to the Awoken and has been shrouded in mystery ever since we first laid eyes on it during the announcement of Destiny 2: Forsaken. How did it come to be? What secrets lie within its walls? What role does Petra Venj play in the Dreaming City? Those are all questions that will be answered below.
Let’s start with a little bit of history. When the Awoken fled their home planet, they sought refuge on Earth. However, they knew their enemies would eventually catch up to them so they constructed The Reef – a massive series of asteroids orbiting the Sun between Mars and Jupiter. The Queen of the Reef established herself as the leader of her people and created a new society. The Awoken built great cities within these mighty rock formations, carving out elaborate caverns and underground passages with their advanced mining machines.

After the events of Taken King, it became clear that Earth was no longer safe for the Awoken. They watched helplessly as Oryx and his Hive brood decimated humanity’s home planet. Many Awoken fled back to The Reef but others decided to stay behind on Earth. These brave souls stayed out of fear or selfishness; they believed that the only way to push back against the darkness and ensure their own survival was to bolster humanity.
The Queen and her brother, Uldren Sov, chose a third option: they would build a massive wall that could protect humanity from their mutual enemies. The two Awoken retreated into The Reef where they began construction of this great wall.
The Dreaming City is a beautiful and mysterious place that was once the home of the Awoken.
It is a massive rock formation that was once the centerpiece of The Reef. Not much is known about its creation, but we do know that it is unlike anything humanity has ever built. Like the rest of the reef, it is a vast cavern carved from an asteroid by unknown means.
It was here, at the heart of the Dreaming City, that the Awoken made their home. It served as a noble house for dozens of years before it became The Queen’s Throne Room. It is now littered with debris and corpses after the Taken swept through seeking to transform its beauty into ash.
It’s now been taken over by the Taken, a powerful new enemy that players will have to face in the Forsaken DLC.
At the center of this massive cavern is a great tree. This tree has long been hidden by The Queen, but she recently allowed it to be seen by all after her brother took his own life in shame. Standing before the great tree, players can see an image of Mara Sov hanging in its branches.
The image offers some insight into the Queen’s past and how she relates to her brother: “I was strong, and Uldren loved me for it. He dared to hope we might be as strong together.”
